Cyclenation - 2009 Campaigning These are exciting times for Cycle Campaigning. Awareness of the issues around sustainable transport has never been higher – Climate Change, Congestion, Obesity, Heart Disease and Social Inclusion are words on everyone’s lips. Now, with the Credit Crunch, many people face a stark choice – a new car or a roof over their head? At the same time, there is a growing awareness that getting people cycling isn’t just about more cycle lanes and routes – important though those are. We need to change the culture on the roads, to one where cyclists are respected, valued and cherished. That is why we support the Twenty’s Plenty Campaign and Driver Liability. There has never been a better time to promote cycling, and local campaign groups and BUGs, embedded in their local communities, are in an ideal place to do it. But these groups are poorly funded and poorly supported. How can we best leverage the potential of these groups? Cyclenation, formerly CCN, has drawn up a development plan which aims to see Cycle Campaign Groups in every town with more than 50,000 inhabitants. We have teamed up with London Cycle Campaign, the largest and most successful group in the country, to attract funding for a paid development team. We have embarked a long journey, and we need the help and support of the cycling community to reach our goal. But, our feet are on the pedals and we aim to go the distance! Simon Geller, Cyclenation Secretary, will tell you more about the Development Plan and update you on progress so far. |
