20mph – The golden opportunity Since its formation less than a year ago, 20’s Plenty For Us has had a singular focus on enabling communities to implement 20 mph as the default speed limit for residential roads. And during that time it has played its part in raising the national profile of this important initiative. It has seen innovative local authorities such as Portsmouth, Oxford and Norwich take advantage of revised DfT guidelines on slower speeds and helped to separate the myth from reality on 20 mph issues. in 2008 it has launched its campaign of “20’s Plenty by 2010” The presentation will demonstrate how the combination of political, social, environmental, educational and transport trends makes 20 mph for residential streets the “golden opportunity” for those campaigning for a more equitable sharing of roads for the benefit of vulnerable road users. Most importantly the argument for slower speed is now winnable and moreover is being won in town halls across the land. It is an initiative that campaigners at national and local level should recognise as providing the greatest gains in road danger reduction and increase in quality and diversity of life on our streets. The presentation will look seek to identify the key factors required in order to move toward a wholesale implementation 20 mph speed limits. 20 mph for residential streets should no longer be an aspiration, but an achievable objective whose time has come in our towns and cities. |
