Living Streets - 2009 Campaigning Living Streets is the national charity campaigning to bring our streets to life, with more walking in people-friendly public spaces. Created in 1929 as the Pedestrians Association, we boast a rich history of campaigning both locally and nationally to put people on foot first, and create safe, attractive and enjoyable streets around the UK. Over the past few years, Living Streets has had a period of huge growth (more than doubling the number of paid staff members in the last year alone!), which is allowing the organisation to reach more people than ever before. But growing so fast also presents some challenges – how can we make our campaigns relevant right across Britain, how can we make sure all our staff are supported by our communications, and how can we make sure our vital local groups and campaigners feel the benefit of our growth? 2009 is a very important year for Living Streets, as we turn 80 years old. We will be starting the year with a bang – launching our new strategy, a new look, and a clear campaigning vision, which will give the organisation a clarity of purpose that we’ve not had before. Lucy Abell, Communications Manager for Living Streets, will take a look at what this will mean for our campaigns, and for our activists, in 2009. Our key themes - of encouraging peoples priority over traffic, of ensuring walking is the natural choice for short journeys, and ensuring that local people are involved in local decision making - will form the backbone to everything we do. And our major campaigns such as the Walk to School campaign and Walking Works, have a great year planned. This is your chance to find out more about what 2009 has to offer from Living Streets, and how you can be a part of it. Lucy will also be manning a stall over the lunchtime break, and would love to speak to activists and get feedback on their plans. |
