Welcome to the Streets Ahead Conference website

15th Nov 2008, The Gateway Centre, Warrington, WA1 1SR

10:30 am to 4:30 pm

Warrington Cycle Campaign and 20's Plenty For Us are  hosting the "Streets Ahead"  conference on 15th November 2008.This is a must for those campaigning for better road conditions for pedestrians and cyclists.

We are focussing on the theme :-

"Cyclists and pedestrians - Campaigning Together, Succeeding Together"

All of us human powered road users share the same vulnerability and this conference will widen the invited attendees to include pedestrian and other non-motorised road campaigners.

The conference will aim to provide real case studies and information to help campaigners. Not so much a presentation on why (you already know that) but how we can achieve our aims. We believe that this will really appeal to grass-roots campaigners and provide them with information, examples, case-studies and success stories to enable them to achieve more in their own local campaigns.

Key topics will be "20 mph for residential roads" and "strict liability", both foundation policies in developing streets as "public spaces" rather than the preserve of motor vehicles.

We have an excellent session planned for the major pedestrian and cycling charities to present their campaigning programmes for 2009. These include CTC, Cyclenation and Living Streets. This will look at the synergy between the campaigns and the opportunities for multilateral campaigning at national and local level. It will also be an opportunity to provide feedback to national campaign representatives.

We have some excellent speakers confirmed for the day which include :-

Lucy Abell Communications Manager for Living Streets. Lucy has worked with many local campaigns on joint pedestrian and cycling issues.
Amy Aeron-Thomas   Executive Director of RoadPeace. Amy worked for the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) for over 10 years and has an MSc in Transport Engineering. Amy is also a director of the International Federation of Pedestrians.
Richard Bearman Co-ordinator Norwich Green Party and Chairman of Norwich Cycle Campaign. Politicians in Norwich have unanimously proposed a 20 mph speed limit on all residential roads.
Paul Cullen Chairman of Oxford Pedestrian's Association. Member of Life Begins at 20 Group who have successfully campaigned for the adoption of 20 mph in Oxford streets and now have the endorsement of the local Head of Transport.
Roger Geffen Campaigns and Policy Manager, CTC. Roger is an influential voice in representing UK cyclists at national level. Recent successes include the modification of the Highway Code to explicitly allow cyclists not to use cycle facilities.
Simon Geller Communications Director of Cyclenation. Simon is also a leading member of CycleSheffield and a Sustrans Ranger.
Rod King Founder of the national 20's Plenty for Us campaign and Campaign Director for Cyclenation.
John Leech, MP   Member of Parliamentary Select Committee on Transport. John has tabled a bill in parliament for 20 mph to be made the default for all residential streets.
Chris Peck Policy Co-ordinator, CTC. Chris has previously worked for the All Party Parliamentary Cycling Group.

We also have a new initiative in The Street Market. There will be an extended period where exhibitions, stands, presentations, posters, and even soapboxes will be available for a wide range of organisations to reflect the very wide "Campaign-diversity" in the conference.

These will include Cycle Infrastructure Design, Cycle Hire, RoadPeace, Cyclenation, Living Streets, Bookstalls, and other pedestrian and cycling organisations.

Delegates are invited to apply for a free stall in The Street Market to present on their own issues of interest to other delegates. For information, please email streetmarket@streets-ahead.org.

So please make a note in your diary for 15th November and bookmark this site to come back and find out what will be happening.

Here are a few of the comments from when we last held such a conference in 2005 :-

"One of the best. Venue good for 'networking' with the fluidity of one big open space."

"Very much appreciate the efforts and enormously valued the conference. Many, many thanks. "

"Worth getting up at four am to get there!"

"Superb conference! Well done."
